Texas’ own, Clint Tompkins has been thinking out of the box since long before he ever started Signature wakeskates, with designs that have repeatedly strayed away from the mainstream wakeskate shapes.I picked up one of the new skates and got sit down and hear Clint’s insight on the board and the thinking and r&d behind the new design. Personally, I have never been a big fan of bi-levels, which is why the new 2011 signature deck had me itching to get my hands on one since the first time I rode it. ……..
I saw clint riding one of the 2011 signature decks out at cowtown wake park about 2 months ago, and the sleek look of the board immediately caught my eye.
When you first look at the board you can tell Clint has thought through many different aspects of how the board itself responds to certain maneuvers, as well as how it affects the style of your riding, simply due to the shape and the way that the board rotates. After I took a few laps on the deck, I was hooked. The board rides so comfortably on obstacles, and has excellent weight distribution for flat water tricks, and kick tricks off of ramps(or any obstacle). This was further confirmed after getting the chance to sit down with clint and hear just what he had to say about the new boards.
- He told me that he has basically came up with a great solution for keeping the weight of the board where it needs to be. This is also why the board is so stable tracking through the water.
- Clint then went on to explain the importance of vertically laminating the board, as well as adding a few secret ingredients in the mix that give great torsion strength, as well as awesome nose and tail support.
- The board is weighted to be predictable when moving through the air, despite undesirable weather conditions ( to an extent of course).
- The snowboard style base is amazing for the cable (what I primarily ride), and is fairly easy to repair, in the event that you ware through the bottom.
At the end of the day I have a High Quality, handmade board. The fact that it is made by a guy that rips on the skate, and the fact that he is from Texas is just a plus.
